Banza copycat chickpea pizza crust made with 5 ingredients, starting with 1 can of chickpeas.

It all started with a can of chickpeas. Well, to be honest, this recipe started with inspiration from Banza, that brand that makes chickpeas into all sorts of craveable classics. My sisters had a pizza night using one of their pre-made chickpea crusts. I was intrigued, but glancing through the rather lengthy ingredient list, I wondered if I could do better. Or, at least, if I could make a similar option that relied more heavily on chickpeas and less on the fillers. This Banza copycat 5-ingredient chickpea pizza crust is what I came up with in my kitchen, and it’s made with a can of chickpeas instead of chickpea flour, almost like a doughy version of hummus that then bakes into a firm pizza crust. The chickpea base keeps the crust gluten free, but it’s also an excellent choice for people with soft diets as it’s much less chewy and can be baked for less time to keep it softer rather than crisp. The chickpeas also boost the protein content of this pizza, which is an added bonus!
This chickpea pizza crust couldn’t be simpler to make. The ingredients are blended together until smooth and then spread on a pizza pan and baked. It can be topped with your favorite pizza toppings, whether that be vegetarian or sausage. Personally, I always choose pineapple, olives, peppers, and mushrooms. To me, a pizza without pineapple is barely worth eating. I know not everyone agrees. Regardless of what you gravitate towards, this chickpea crust pizza can be used as a vehicle for the classic or the unconventional; this is your permission to go crazy. 🙂 You can even use this recipe to make a flatbread for any sort of topping you may choose.
Let’s go through our minimal ingredient list:
Chickpeas - Any brand, drained and rinsed.
Tapioca Starch - Starch firms up the chickpeas to create a dough. If you don’t have tapioca starch on hand, try a different type of starch, such as potato starch or cornstarch.
Egg - Egg forms the binder for this recipe, helping to incorporate the starch into the chickpeas to form the dough.
Spices - A couple different spices add an Italian like flair, classic to pizza!
Salt - Obviously a pinch of salt is a necessity for flavor.

BANZA COPYCAT 5-INGREDIENT CHICKPEA PIZZA CRUST (GF, VG, SD, DF)
Yield: 1 10-12 inch pizza crust
What You'll Need:
1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed, and patted dry
¼ cup tapioca starch
1 egg
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon salt
How To Make it
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees, and grease a pizza pan.
2. Add the chickpeas, starch, egg, seasonings, and salt to the bowl of a food processor or blender and blend until smooth, making sure to scrape down the sides to incorporate all the ingredients.
3. Spread the chickpea batter on the prepared pizza pan. It should be about ¼ inch or so thick. Mine turned out to be about 10-12 inches in diameter.
4. Bake the pizza crust for about 30 minutes then flip it over and bake for an additional 10 minutes. It should be easy to flip, but if it isn’t, give it another 5 minutes prior to flipping. Remove the pizza crust from the oven.
5. Spread the sauce and toppings over the pizza. Bake another 20 minutes or until the cheese is nicely browned, and the toppings are cooked through.
